Wikileaks has pit some interesting diplomatic gossip on the table but most of this is known to observers (arabs and persians not getting along) as well as views of US gov around the security of nuclear material in pakistan and what to do about it.
What is of interest is
A) the general public get to see this (sort of like finding out the Queen eats cornflakes)
B) it has taken so long for this to happen
C) this is a past time in US Gov (particularly state) but not on this scale see previous leaks such as pentagon papers, deepthroat, leaking Kissinger cables, valerie plame affair
D) most serious diplomats are aware that what they say is likely to be transmitted to others (either unintentionally or intentionally) as gossip and informal conversation are part and parcel of diplomacy.
E) could this be intentional so as to distract attention from something else or to focus on this issue so other things can be done?
Best

Apparently these documents are routinely circulated to thousands of
eyeballs within the US Government and diplomatic service. They need to
be able to read them "in the clear". Presumably, one of the recipients
has been keeping copies, and that's what needs to be made harder, not
making the sender's systems and the transmission networks more secure.
