We received one of these. You just need to search for them using your
favourite search engine to see how things go...
I pointed out to our school some of the issues and suggested that they
should reconsider their promoting of it. If you return the form saying no
thanks it goes to the company anyway who presumably contact you to persuade
you to change your mind - I binned it.

Subject: [data-protection] Schools and the Student Support Centre
Dear Colleagues
Should schools be helping private companies to farm details of children and
their parents' names, addresses and contact details?
Those of you who have children may have received a letter from their
headteacher recently enclosing a form to be completed for the Student
Support Centre:
http://www.student-support.co.uk/
As far as I can see this is a private company which sells home tuition
support.
The letter from the head teacher requires the form to be completed and sent
back to the school. The form requires parents to say whether they are
interested. Even if they are not interested it still seems to require (or at
least it is not clear) that parents complete their and their child's
details. The wording above the form states that the information will not be
shared with other organisations. However it does say that it will be used by
the Student Support Centre.
I have uploaded both the letter and the form on our website links page
(under DP):
http://www.actnow.org.uk/content/19
Is this right? Is it fair processing to almost force parents to give their
details? Should schools be doing this just because they may get a fee from
the company?
Has anyone on the list advised schools (from a DP angle) in respect of this?
Has anybody tried explaining privacy and data protection to a ten year old?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards
