Ethical Issues of Emerging ICT Applications (ETICA)
As a stream of the EU FP7 Project PrimeLife and IFIP Working Groups
9.2,9.6/11.7, 11.4, 11.6 Summer school on Privacy and Identity Management for
Life
To be held in Helsingborg, Sweden 2nd- 6th August 2010
Summer 2010 will see ETICA.s first international summer school on the topic of
Emerging Information and Communication Technologies and resulting ethical,
privacy and identity issues as part of the PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School on
Privacy and Identity Management for Life.
ETICA is a European research project funded under the Science in Society 7th
Framework (FP7) programme. The project started in April 2009 and runs up to May
2011. The main aim of the project is to:
. Explore future and emerging technologies likely to be dominant in the medium
term future (10 to 15 years)
. Investigate ethical issues the technologies are likely to raise and
. Provide recommendations for governance arrangements suitable to address such
issues.
The prospect of new and emerging technologies is an exciting one, not least
because of the potential developments and improvements they promise to bring to
our lives. Enhanced better health, the allure of new forms of friendships, the
fight against crime, the potential for better and more accessible education, an
improved environment as a result of new technologies; all give a sense of
excitement and optimism of what might be. However, this sense of what might be
often overshadows the need to critically examine the ethical issues that may
result.
To explore these issues and because ethical issues of emerging technologies are
global and cross-cultural, ETICA is inviting Master.s and/or PhD students from
different disciplines whose work looks at future and emerging technologies
including ethics, privacy and identity management to submit papers for
consideration at the Summer School. The overall 5 day school will be
interactive in character, and will be composed of keynote lectures, seminars,
tutorials and workshops with Master and PhD student presentations. The
principle of the summer school including the one day ETICA stream is to
encourage young academic and industry entrants to the field of emerging ICT.s
with consideration to the resulting ethical, privacy and identity concerns. The
summer school provides an opportunity for students to share their own ideas and
to build up a collegial relationship with others. Students that actively
participate in the 5 day PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School, in particular those who
present a paper, can receive a course certificate which awards 3 ECTS at the
PhD level. The certificate can certify the topic of the contributed paper to
demonstrate its relation or non-relation to the student.s Masters./PhD thesis.
Topics of particular interest to the ETICA Stream along with the topics
specified by the PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School call for papers may broadly
address Emerging Information and Communication Technologies and resulting
ethical, privacy and identity issues, including but are not limited to the
following topics:
. Use, impact and application of identified emerging technologies
. Ethical concerns of emerging technologies
. Ways of addressing future ethical issues
. Values, ethics and morality under conditions of uncertainty
Contributions will be selected based on an extended abstract review by the
Summer School Programme Committee. Accepted short versions of papers will be
made available to all participants in the PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School
Pre-Proceedings. After the Summer School, authors will have the opportunity to
submit their final full papers (which address questions and aspects raised
during the Summer School) for publication in the PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School
Proceedings published by the official IFIP publisher (Springer). The papers to
be included in the Final Proceedings published will again be reviewed and
selected by the Summer School Programme Committee.
