We charge a £10 deposit for dictaphones and a £30 deposit for laptops to encourage the student to look after them and return them on time (it's pretty effective too, compared to the pre-deposit days).
Everything's also insured for theft and accidental damage. Recently a student destroyed a laptop screen by using it too near a radiator. The insurance wouldn't class this as an accident, insisting instead it was 'neglect'.

Subject: Re: Digital voice recorders for loan
Can I chip in on this actually - I have just bought several of the Olympus models for loan to students who can't get DSA.
Does anybody ask the student to either, a) cover insurance for these items, b) ask the student to cover the cost of the device in case of damage, or c) just lend them to the student and absorb the cost of these come what may?

I know there are a range available and many DSA reports recommend Olympus ones however to begin with we're after something not too expensive but which has reasonable file storage and easy to upload / download files onto a pc.
