In the particular case acted on - though I can see the argument in favour of allowing such a posting, I would advise those who want to do this to be aware of the list's ethos and contribute properly (as many "promoters" do) rather than randomly issuing such calls. On balance, I am supportive of the action taken!

It's interesting that you mention the proportion of commercial use to genuine contribution. I've always felt that the list struck a good balance of enabling members to discuss commercial activity while still containing sufficient "proper" conversation to redress the balance. And I think I'm right in saying that there are privileges afforded to people who are regular contributors in this regard. Which I am fine with, assuming it stays sensible.

If the question is whether we afford those same privileges to people who don't contribute in other ways then no - I think you were correct.

But I would also not endorse a blanket ban on anything which a genuine member feels is genuinely useful to the list.

Dear all,

Yesterday I saw what I judged to be "yet another person seeking to take advantage of this list", deleted their message form the archives and, because the message was the only message ever sent, and the circumstances made it obvious that the person (an anonymous person) had joined the list only to promote something, I blocked them from further posting.

Rightly I informed the list, and also asked Sam Hill, the co-moderator, to take a look at my actions.  It is right that moderator actions should be transparent and accountable.

Yesterday evening I received a wholly valid and important comment by a list member.  Since it was a private comment I will not release it to the list, though the originator may choose to with my blessing.  The substance was that the message I deleted was a call for papers, and that it was, in their opinion, potentially a valid use of the list since it came from a government style body, thus was a valid and academic use of the list.  I promised to that that point on board, though was not convinced of the argument.

In list matters I am your servant, along with Sam.  We have no power and no proprietors' rights over this list.  You've simply delegated to use the task of keeping it clean and sweet.  She and I are human and we may make good faith errors, and we (mainly I, since I seem to zap more than she does!) may misinterpret your requirements in good faith.

If you wish us as a community to revisit and/or discuss and/or renew the consensus built by survey entitled Commercial Use of Data Protection List,  available at https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/surveymgmt.cgi (you need to log in) please let us do that.  Sam and I will be happy to rerun that survey or modify its questions to suit the needs of you, the people we serve.  Equally, if you feel I was in error, please say so clearly, ideally "on list", but off list to [log in to unmask] (which reaches me and Sam) if you prefer.  I assure you that I will not take a consensus against me personally.  I am simply interested in obeying the consensus, whatever that consensus proves to be.  Our role here is to do what you ask, and to ensure to the best of our ability that this is in accordance with JISCMail rules.
