I think that it would be quite oppressive to identify as "dismissed". I'm
sure some people might argue that including them in a "left" list would be
doubtful.

Subject: [data-protection] Reason for leaving - dismissal
Could anyone give me a steer on what the issues would be for producing a
monthly update letter for staff in an organisation that listed new staff,
staff who have changed posts, staff who have retired, staff who have left
for another job (or similar) and staff who have been dismissed?
It is the dismissed category that I am particularly concerned about.
Currently only HR and directly involved managers would know about staff who
have been dismissed (a few people may be able to put two and two together if
they worked in the same area perhaps).
I can't find anything in the Act or the Employment Practices Code, but I
wonder whether the processing would count as excessive. There may also be a
risk of causing damage and distress to the data subject (dismissal may be on
medical grounds, but the word "dismissal" hints at "fingers in till" kind of
behaviour for some people). My preference would be to just list "People who
left" as a single category, thus avoiding this grey area, but I think other
people feel that it is important that staff understand that dismissal is
real and happens in the workplace.
Any thoughts?
