Disability Strategy Tutor- Job Specification
Grade: 7 Professional Specialist
Responsible to: Relevant Disability Co-ordinator
Summary of the Role: to provide non-medical, study skills support and
tuition for students with a specific learning difficulty e.g. dyslexia,
a mental health difficulty, or any other disability which requires
students to develop effective non-subject specific study skills and
strategies.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
The points below provide a framework for the role of Disability Strategy
Tutor, which may develop and change over time. This list should not be
regarded as a definitive list of responsibilities and this job
description may be reviewed in the future.
* To work on a 1-1 basis with students with specific
learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia) and mental health difficulties.
* To have specialist knowledge of specific learning
difficulties and the impact of these on fulfilling the requirements of
studying at HE level.
* To be self-directed and work on an ongoing weekly basis
with students to facilitate acquisition of appropriate non-subject
specific study skills and strategies
* To enable students to identify strategies which
complement their individual learning styles and requirements e.g.
multi-sensory memory techniques or mind mapping
* Enable students to focus on the appropriate
organisational and structural approaches to complete coursework and
prepare for exams
* Show sensitivity and understanding of the psychological
impact of specific learning difficulties and other disabilities in the
Higher Education environment, and use this knowledge to tailor support
appropriately
* use problem solving skills to transfer knowledge in
creative and individualised ways
* To understand and work within the Disability
Discrimination Act 1995 and the Special Educational Needs and
Disabilities Act 2001
* To keep accurate and up to date records of support
given, and appraise students' progress
* To provide written feedback to funding providers on the
nature and content of individualised support, and provide
recommendations for continuation of support if necessary
* To engage in any research or preparation as necessary to
suit the learning needs of the students
* To attend meetings and training as necessary, engaging
in peer training and other CPD where appropriate
* Refer students to appropriate sources of support
throughout the university e.g. libraries, Student Counselling Centre,
Student Advice Centre, Skills Centre
* To work, at all times, in accordance with the Policy,
Practice and Code of Conduct for Disability Strategy Tutors
* To work, at all times, in accordance with the principles
of the social model of disability and the aim of creating an inclusive
student experience for all.
In addition, the role may also provide occasional opportunities for the
post-holder to deliver additional projects or work, in line with the
post-holder's skills and experience and appropriate to the grade for
this post. This might include, for example, devising and delivering
workshop training to dyslexic and other disabled students on non-subject
specific study skills or academic writing.
Disability Strategy Tutor- Person Specification
Essential
Applicants are expected to demonstrate the following essential skills
and attributes in their application:
* A relevant post graduate qualification in supporting people with
specific learning difficulties, or working towards such a qualification
* Experience in providing direct support to adults/ young people
with specific learning difficulties and/ or disability related
additional learning needs
* Knowledge of the issues faced by people with specific learning
difficulties and other disabilities in FE/HE
* General understanding of academic tasks in Higher Education and
of the pressures and issues faced by students in Higher Education
* Knowledge of academic study skills
* Ability to work flexibly and on own initiative
* Ability to demonstrate commitment and reliability
* Experience of working within professional boundaries, handling
confidential information and maintaining discretion
* Excellent record-keeping skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels
and an attention to detail

* Confident user of MS word, email and internet search engines
* Willingness to learn and use disability specific software and
technology
Desirable
The following skills and attributes are considered desirable and
applicants are invited to demonstrate these in their application, where
possible:
* An understanding of current anti-discrimination legislation.
* A sound understanding of systems, procedures, standards and
principles of Higher Education institutions and study.
This post involves giving specialist one to one support to students who,
primarily, are dyslexic or have another SpLD.
