One possible solution (although not a definitive solution for this
particular student) is to use Audio Notetaker. Used in combination with a
digital recorder (e.g., the Olympus DS series) it is possible to reference,
and manage audio recordings.

For example, if PowerPoint is used as part of the lecture and the tutor is
willing to distribute the presentation, as previously mentioned (by
intranet, VLE etc) a student can synchronise the audio recording with the
PowerPoint slides. This helps to put the audio recording of the lecture into
some sort of visual and audible context.

The software is easy to use but it does require either the student or
someone on their behalf to 'index' the recording as the tutor is moving
through the slides.

Iansyst have a pilot study on their site:

Hi,
the non-attendance is of course due to the student's disability.
However, I am thinking of putting in place a note taker in the
student's absence for ALL of the lectures of certain units
(specifically, the student cannot access lecture theatres, as opposed
to classrooms).

It makes sense to allow notes to be taken if the non-attendance is due
to disability in some way, but as I found you need them taking when
you are ill too as you can't just ask for a copy of someone else's
notes as a 'normal' student would do. I'm not sure what the official
line is on this but when I needed notes taking they were taken for me
if I missed lectures for disabilities reasons or just general ill
health.
