Hi
The following article gives details about recent developments in this area,
and touches on the limitations in using computer-based translation.
http://www.socialdailynews.com/2007/09/ibm-animates-sign-language-avatar/
I think we are still some way off from a software-based system that can
accurately translate written text (or spoken English) into BSL - although
it should be possible for a system to support reading or following spoken
English via computer-generated SSE to be developed.
Most BSL users understand correctly structured, unambiguous written English
without need for assistance, but should be provided with a BSL interpreter
when it might be important to demonstrate the person could possibly have
misinterpreted written language without assistance e.g. in exams.
The OU have a page about preparing work in language accessible to BSL users:
http://www.open.ac.uk/inclusiveteaching/pages/understanding-and-awareness/deaf-students-and-written-english.php
and BATOD provide advice at
http://www.batod.org.uk/index.php?id=/articles/guidelines/preparingworksheets.htm
Hope this helps
Ian Francis

Subject: converting text to BSL
Hi there
I am trying to find out about any kinds of online resources or software
that might help to translate written text into BSL.
Has any experience of such resources or does anyone know of any examples
of developments in this area in education?
Thanks in anticipation!
