The problem I've got is that i need to get this message to all of our schools so that we can avoid the situation of a complaining parent! A lot of places (not just schools) don't realise that there is a process to go through to obtain information and they feel obliged to provide the Police with just about anything they ask for. Sadly there are some officers who take advantage of this rather than spend a bit more time doing it correctly!
My ultimate aim is to have something issued to each school etc which can be pinned on a wall in reception that lists exactly what the police are entitled to and what the obligations of the school are. Kind of a "head the problems off at the pass" action!

I very much agree with Antoinette. Requests by the Police from schools
should be treated in the same way as a request by the Police to any other
institution but with due regard for the ages of the pupils who may become
involved.
I would go further than discouraging "give me the details of all pupils who
live on this bus route" type requests and say that should be refused until
sufficient reason for the request is given, in writing and at the request of
a senior officer. Section 29 form anyone?
As I have said many many times before, the average Policeman is very fond of
fishing.
Simon Howarth.

Just to clarify - you are referring to police officers approaching
schools for information on their pupils? Just my own quick thoughts
would be that requests for information on specific pupils must be in
writing, the decision to release information should be commensurate with
the crime (ie. Jonny sticking his gum underneath a bus seat should not
be the subject of a police shakedown, but a serious assault on the bus
driver would be another matter), the age of the pupils is also a factor
I would have thought, given that under 12s cannot generally be
prosecuted. I would also take the view that "fishing expedition"
enquiries ie. along the lines of "give me the details of all pupils who
live on this bus route" should be discouraged.

Subject: [data-protection] School information disclosures
Hello all,
We're having a little bit of a problem in relation to how much (or how
little) information should be given to an officer when they approach a
school for assistance and at what point should they provide it. I'm
trying to put together a checklist of points for schools to ask and of
things they should expect to be shown before they release the
information.
Does anyone have a list of this sort of thing which they issue to the
schools or any guidance they use in this area?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sarah.
