Dear Mary
It could be argued that this practice is in fact breaching the DPA as
by displaying the examination marks in this way the institution is
disclosing personal data about an individual. It may well be though,
that the student has signed up to this practice in signing up to their
course, in which case you have the student's consent to process.
I do not know of any legal reason to publish marks in this way and
certainly it's not done this way here. Students access their marks by
their secure internet access and can only see their results, no-one
elses.
I would respect the student's wishes in this case - I wouldn't want
anyone else to know what I got before I did and I don't think there's
any breach of legislation in doing so.

Dear all
This is one for those primarily working in the education sector...
A final year student has requested that her name be removed from the
published list of examination marks as she may not be around on the day
the marks are published and does not want others to see her results
before
she does.
Is anyone aware of any legal requirement for student's names to be
publically listed or are we able to respect this student's wish NOT to
have her name published in this way?
Any views would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mary Ann
