A long while ago where I then worked we were supposed to have an annual
appraisal carried out by our line managers. These were not taken very
seriously by the managers or the staff in my group. I on one occasion
insisted on one.
The appraisal included questions about training that the member of staff
required and possibly where they saw their career going.
Clearly the absence of an appraisal wouldn't have implied that members of
staff were entirely happy with their position, nor that they didn't consider
they needed any training.
