Subject: Numbers of disabled students
Dear colleagues.
I am currently very interested in looking into the number of students
disclosing disabilities and impairments within HEIs. As I am sure many
of
you will have experienced, over the last 3-4 years, Loughborough
university
has seen a vast increase in the numbers of students seeking support.
Obviously, this increase in numbers has a profound effect on the way
that
resources are allocated and strategic planning takes place.
I am particularly interested in looking at the progression of numbers
over
the last 3-4 years (as a proportion of overall student population) to
see
whether any statistical trends can be predicted, and whether it would be
possible to predict with any degree of accuracy a "peak" level for which
a
university should plan, both in terms of resources and numbers of
students
being supported.
Clearly, this could be a complicated area, with raw numbers not
necessarily
being proportional to the complexity of work necessary to provide an
appropriately inclusive environment.
Should any colleagues wish to share information about numbers of
students
supported, or any information they may have about predicted peak levels
of
support, I would receive this most gratefully.
Also, if enough data is available, I would be happy (given time) to
report
back on this information, should anyone be interested.
I look forward to hearing from you.
