(I'm resending with the correct subject line and a typo or two corrected)
My partner in England received a call the other day, asking about a taxi
to Heathrow airport. After some discussion with the caller, which she
initially assumed to be a wrong number, it emerged that 192.com is
publishing her (the contract with BT is my name) ex-directory telephone
number as the contact number for a dormant company of which she is
Secretary ) on the web.
To find this listing, you can go to 192.com and search for "Ipswich
Airport Limited" -- you will see a Colchester (01206) number.
After some thought, it would appear possible that the number has been
obtained from Companies House.
I recall that the annual return and other forms have there is a space
to give a number for the purpose of CH being able to contact the
submitter of the statutory form. This space is entirely optional to
complete, and IIRC there is a note to the effect that anyone who gets
statutory copies will be able to see this number (as its on the form!),
but it was not supplied to CH for the purpose of being published
electronically and it is NOT a general contact number for this English
Ltd. Company.
(In passing, I have other issues with 192.com regarding their
publication of out-of-date electoral data on the web. By definition is
it not the case that this data is being retained and processed by
192.com longer than necessary?)
Could I please ask the list :-
(a) what are your thoughts on the first scenario, assuming our guess at
the source of the data is correct.
(b) does anyone have any idea what 192.com might be doing if our guess
is incorrect.
(c) what other recent experiences have you had regarding 192.com.
I will of course be writing to 192.com formally, but any thoughts you
may have now, would be much appreciated as it will help focus my letter.
