Asking the student to use an electric wheelchair seems a bit unfair unless
he really needs this for mobility purposes. He might have been working hard
to avoid having to use a wheelchair. He could argue that he's been 'forced
into a wheelchair' because the university can't adapt to his needs.
Can't the department review time-tabling of rooms so that only one or two
rooms are used for lectures/seminars, each of which has a custom built chair
for the student? Presumably the student has additional mobility problems, so
adjusting the timetable is already being considered anyway?

Thanks to those who have responded on and off list. The problem we have
is that we have looked at portable back supports and unfortunately these
won't be suitable for one of the students in question in all situations
and the other student requires arm rests and as he is quite well built
an off the peg adjustable office chair isn't robust enough...
We are toying with the idea of getting an electric wheelchair so that
the student could sit wherever he needed to be - not sure if he will
like this idea though and as he is going into his final year this will
be a very costly option!

Hi Roz
obviously it depends what adaptations the students need, but we had a
student who required a chair that kept her posture properly aligned and
we also found the logistics of equipping all the right rooms with
suitable chairs to be problematic.
Instead, we bought a Back Friend which the student carried with her and
put onto existing chairs wherever she happened to be. In her case, this
provided a suitable amount of support and wasn't too heavy.
You can see what one looks like at:
