We have recommended that the difference is funded from the DSA in Needs
Assessments reports before.
It's always worth referring to the "additional expenditure the student is
obliged to incur" part of the DSA regulations:
B10. Regulation 13 provides for students to be eligible for a DSA grant
which is equal to the amount of additional expenditure the student is
obliged to incur in respect of their attendance on a course which is
incurred as a direct result of their disability. The four DSA allowances
are intended to help a disabled student to benefit fully from his course.
Disabled students' allowances are not subject to income assessment. The
Regulations do not define disability, but LEAs should consider all cases
where extra costs are incurred in studying because of a disability, a mental
health difficulty or a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia.
As long as claiming from the DSA doesn't compromise any other forms of
support I'd guess this would be the way to go.

Subject: cost of en-suite room in halls
Dear All,
I have a feeling that this may have been discussed before but would
like some current feedback from anyone who can help.
I have received a letter from a potential student who requires an en-
suite room in halls as a result of his medical condition. He has asked if
he can pay the rate charged for the non en-suite rooms ( a difference
of several hundred pounds).
I would like to know what other HEIs do in this situation:
1) charge less?
2) charge the going rate and recover the difference from DSA or other
funds available?
3) something else?
Please let me know if you have some info which could help me
formulate a policy here.
Many thanks
Pat
