http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/enlargement/candidate.htm has the list of
candidate countries for the EEC, not all, presumably, for 1 May 2004, since
the talk is of 10 nations (Or did I miss something?). Assuming all the
politics falls into place, on May 1st Data Protection expands, covering
almost double the previous number of nations. According to the EFTA site 28
nations will be included in the EEA (similar and planned simultaneous
expansion of EEC and EEA).
Data Protection is relatively small beer compared with the other huge
legislative issues in adding these nations to the EEC.
We have some initial thoughts.
http://www.marketimprove.com/hotnews/EEC_Expansion.html carries an initial
look at the issues. It may well be that the transition arrangements allow
this work to proceed more slowly, but we feel that wise corporations and
wise government organisations who reach across national boundaries should
reserve time to look at these areas now.
So, good luck to us all! Depending in implementation speed this is
potentially the biggest thing to hit Data Protection since the laws were
first drafted.
Now, if it happened on May the 4th, then Star Wars fans could offer a toast,
too!
