I've been trying to work out if that makes May the First more or less of a
challenge!
Since they are "already aware" (probably) then the answer is that it will
probably be more of a challenge than their being unaware and faced with "my
God I must catch up fast" problems.
I think, on balance, the date will prove to be yet another sudden awakening
in this "dead sheep" like topic. And, as usual, the alarm clock will have a
snooze button.
But that makes it no less essential to be prepared and to be aware.
Looked at in a similar manner to Spain, draconian fines levied in the less
developed nations on multinational corporations will provide them with an
influx of much needed hard currency. (Spain, of course, pretends it is a
developing country in order to draw out of the EEC the same contribution
that the UK pays in [Source - Jeremy Clarkson {ok, he's a motoring
journalist, but what the heck!}]).

I believe there was a proposal in Decenber 2001 for the potential new
nations to have representatives within the EU Commision Article 29 Group
excluding voting rights. So Data Protection issues will not be that new to
new states joining. See :
