Further information on this:
The BT Nuisance Call BUREAU (this is the real service, not the "out of hours
help line") says that it knows NO circumstances where a charge can be
incurred by pressing any keys during a phone call. ICSTIS also confirms
this separately.
The BUREAU says that this is an old wives tale that appeared in the press
without substantiation and no-one has ever been charged any money at all.
The old wives tale refers to charges of between £15-20 a minute, but I am
assured categorically that this is impossible. Nonetheless the old wives
tale is widely believed by highly credible people. I also believed it.
That really rather ruined my credibility, didn’t it?
One of our number is kindly investigating the company and the address it
gave from the USA even so. Fortunately it seems that no actual fraud has
been committed (though I will await my bill with some small trepidation).
As a precaution I have still informed my phone billing companies that I will
reject any charges resulting from this, though.
The Data Protection element here is that TPS registration is impotent over
stuff like this since the call originates outside the UK.

Subject: [data-protection] off topic. "press 9 to be transferred to an
operator"
Does anyone have any experience with being called by an automated service
which says "press 9 to be transferred to an operator"?
BT Nuisance Call Advisory Service say that by doing so I have probably
actually physically called a premium rate number!!!!! And thus created a
charge on my bill. Imagine the fun I am going to have with not paying that
to BT!
Of course my phone at home is TPS listed, but the call appears to have
originated form the USA.
ICSTIS will be phoned in the morning.
