Remember the UKIC's email alerts scheme? The one where we could all play
with each other's email addresses and subscriptions?
It;s official! the result of the Request for Assessment is that it is
"Unlikely that site site complied with the Seventh Principle". This is the
formal result. Or "Mrs, Jones? You are slightly pregnant". The formal
result is a definite maybe! ROFLMAO!
And, their Internal Compliance Officer says, "there is a balance between
security and accessibility".
Well yes. Of course there is.......... No, wait. No,
there is not. A secure site is not mutually exclusive from an accessible
site. Security and accessibility are easily able to coexist. Good security
and good accessibility are part of good design.
As an additional issue, the current software offering on the UKIC's site may
have many billions of email addresses "force subscribed". Software is easy
enough to create which creates passwords and "stuffs" their email list with
new email addresses (real or imagined) and passwords. (some offence or
other is bound to be committed here, so I am not suggesting anyone does
this). Now get this: Because there is no "I forgot my password" button
NONE of the force subscribed list have the ability to "unsubscribe at any
time" because they have no idea what their password is to unsubscribe!
The site, software, quality control and so much else do not pass scrutiny
IMHO.
And we have to work within a framework where the demigods of guardianship
are incapable of running a simple email subscription service.
I know I have said this before, but look at the simple scheme we use on our
own site to subscribe, unsubscribe, refer friends, manage preferences etc.
NO, I am not soliciting subscriptions by email. It is immaterial to me
whether you end up subscribed on or unsubscribed from my own lists. I am
simply showing you an example of good practice that is almost certainly
imperfect, but is simple, legal and has low implementation cost (it took
about ?800 of freelance analyst/programmer time and a couple of hours of my
time, and is tailor made for me) http://www.marketimprove.com/contact/ is
the url to look at, if you choose.
