It's a legal obligation, it's not for anything. It's one of several aspects
of the DPA which seem to be based on the Frustrated Parent Principle of
"Because I Say So". The Commissioner is obliged to provide a Notification
Register. He can't stop providing it because the DPA requires him to, and
while all sorts of things may be assumed about what it's for, the DPA
doesn't mention a purpose. I think an organisation can derive a certain
amount of internal discipline by having a rigorous notification-building
procedure every year, really looking into what they do and why.
Alternatively, it's possible just to use a template and do it in five
minutes. So it's rather in the eye of the beholder. You can see it as an
opportunity to keep a strong grip on your DP practices, or you can see it as
DP wallpaper.
