There is a history here, as you might have expected, so I think the parent
will want all data he or she is entitled to without having to wait longer
than necessary.
Apparently, some schools don't release all jotters at the end of the school
year. I've been told they keep a sample of the work in case the school
inspectors want to see them. If this is the case, and if the jotters would
otherwise be personal data, then presumably it is important to discover how
the jotters are stored (e.g. by reference to the class, by reference only to
the year with no subdivisions according to the class)!!

"The potential situation here is that a subject access may be made by a
parent for a copy of the jotters. There may be be the disproportionate
effort exemption (but that's a different story..)"
At the end of each school year, my children bring home ream of work books,
artwork etc. - as my creaking loft can testify, so it might be worth asking
a parent wait, unless there were urgent and specific concerns (which the
parent should identify - no need to meet blanket requests under DPA, now FOI
would be a different matter...).
