Mobility
I have just done an assessment for a student with MS who has had an
electronic scooter / buggy supplied by his University. They have
asked if such a thing can be supplied under the DSA. My initial
reaction was no, as it seems to be more related to disabled living
allowance then the DSA. They have said that some LEA they have spoken
to seem in favour of the idea as the campus in question is vast and
without such transport the students could not remain. In the past, in
such circumstances, the argument seems to have been that the students
made the decision to go that campus so the problem is theirs, but if
the condiotion that prevents them from moving freely around the
campus is degenerative and subject to remission such as MS, does this
not overcome that view?.
My opinion is still that it is a problem for the disabled living
allowance.
Does anyone have any other view or experience ?.
Dyslexia
I prefer to use strategies combined with the individuals strengths to
allow them to develop skills with the aid of technology (the
holistic approach). Voice activated has it's place but it seems to me
to be like trying to overcome an arterial bleed with a sticky
plaster. It may hold the situation but it does nothing to improve it.
Most of the problems that the dyslexic individual experiences cannot
be addressed by voice activated, indeed it could be seen to hinder
overall development.
