Dear all
HELLO!
As a 'quieter member', I'd love to point out a few things.
Firstly, it's very entertaining to watch 'the loudmouths' thrash out a
point on here!
I'm very outspoken myself, and contribute to the list, but only when I
feel it is relevant, and not something on which I am already very clear
on. As an opionated person, I've already got solid views on even the
most contentious issues. I come from the Ian Buckland school of Data
Protection, and as such are somewhat of a puritan. (apologies Ian!)
Secondly, I currently perform the roles of DPO / ISO and FOI for a
large housing group, and still spend time advising the police (where I
previously spent the last few years as a DP Auditor). Personally, I
just wish I had the time to contribute regularly - I don't know how some
people manage to post so many responses and get evertything else done!
Lastly, I find this list hugely helpful on occassion, I'd like to thank
everyone on here, at least those who keep me so entertained and my mind
open to other arguements, to which otherwise I may dismiss out of hand.
Thanks guys

What has been really good is the number of people who responded to
this,
either privately or off list.
Main reasons for being a "quieter member" are:
+ initial shyness
+ feeling that others are experts so remaining silent
+ great interest in reading but no questions to ask
+ DP is a part of their role only (unsurprising) so will speak when
they
have a question
The purpose of my original message was simple. To encourage people to
break
the ice and to decide quite simply to join in.
Now a couple of people have been treated poorly in the past, and that
is
their reason for not contributing. I can't say I blame them for that.
I
think our moderator would want to get involved in resolving any
"down-slapping incidents" though. I can't see the point of slapping
someone
down when they are here to learn. We all start off ignorant. I
suppose we
become dangerous when we "half know" and that's our vulnerable point.
Those
of us who realise how little we actually know maybe the ideal posters?
Now
there is a thought to play with!
As ever I remain consciously incompetent!
