WORKSHOPS AT THE OPEN UNIVERSITY
There are a few places left on the following workshops in December:
Teaching with audio and video in open and distance learning
A one-day workshop
Many media are available for use in open or distance learning. After print,
audio and video are probably the two most used media. But which media might
best meet your learners' needs? And how might they best be combined?
Date: 15 December 1999, 09.30 - 17.00
Venue: The Open University Training Centre, Cofferidge Close, Stony
Stratford, Milton Keynes
Who will benefit: Teachers, trainers, managers and course developers
concerned with choosing and using media in open or distance learning
systems.
The workshop should help you to:
1. Evaluate the advantages and limitations of some of the most commonly
available learning media.
2. Observe and discuss the ways in which audio and video materials have been
used in some sample teaching sequences.
3. Examine some criteria for choosing media.
4. Plan how you might use audio or video (along with other media) in your
own teaching.
5. Make more effective use of whichever media you choose.
Workshop leader: Adrian Kirkwood
Fee: £195-less 10% discount if you book more than one place on this or any
of our other workshops or courses. (Each workshop member will receive a copy
of Rethinking University Teaching by Diana Laurillard.)

Open and distance learning systems evaluation workshop
This workshop consists of two one-day sessions and is a combination of
practical and theoretical issues relating to the evaluation of open and
distance learning systems
Date: Day 1: 16 December 1999, 09.30 - 17.00; Day 2: 17 December 1999,
09.30 - 17.00
Venue: The Open University Training Centre, Cofferidge Close, Stony
Stratford, Milton Keynes
Who will benefit: Teachers, trainers, managers and course developers
interested in improving their open learning provision with the help of
planned evaluation.
Workshop aims: On the first day participants will gain hands-on experience
of both commonly used and more recently developed survey research
methodology tools that are used in evaluation of open and distance learning
systems, set within discussion of the contexts in which they might be used.
On the second day participants will discuss and develop frameworks for
evaluating open and distance learning systems with particular reference to
their own needs, drawing on their own experience and the skills they have
acquired on day one.
By the end of the second day of the workshop we will have considered
evaluation systems which would be suitable for a range of institutions, have
gained experience of a range of survey tools and have drawn together a first
outline design for an evaluation programme suited to individual needs.
The two-day sessions are designed to be complementary, but you may wish to
participate in one session only, dependent upon your needs and interest.
Day one is designed for and is essential for, those who are coming to
evaluation issues with little or no prior skills in the use of survey
techniques and tools. Day two will draw upon these skills in the course of
discussion and initial design of an evaluation programme.
Workshop leaders: Pat Fung and Anne Jelfs
Fee: Day 1 £195; Days 1 and 2 combined £350 -less 10% discount if you book
more than one place on this or any of our other workshops or courses. (Each
workshop member will receive a copy of Programme Evaluation and Quality)
