Hello,
good news :-)
Two independent studies in Denmark and Norway have show a significant
progress in spelling and reading for users of the Yak-Yak technology. The
Danish was in a prison setting by the penal authorities - the Norwegian
in a public school district.
This coming Thursday 17th of June at 5:20 PM the developer of this award
winning software tool (to be released in English September 1999) will
give a presentation at the International Conference on Multilingualism
and Dyslexia at the University of Manchester (UMIST). The lecture is
described below.
Yak-Yak - the language processor
Dyslexic children and adults have learned writing and reading with the
"Yak-Yak language processor" software. This Danish developed software
utilises artificial intelligence, synthetic speech and a new intuitive
methodology developed through practical teaching. A dyslexic can learn
error-free writing at his/hers intellectual level in a very short time. A
normally functioning dyslexic taught by a SuperYak instructor has a
spelling/writing breakthrough within the very first training session on
the computer followed by independent writing. The student must have
access to a computer w/Yak-Yak every day. During a 20-hour training
schedule over some weeks, the student will develop his/hers personal
strategy for writing on the computer as well as learn the "culture of
writing". Reading of texts may be supported by a scanner with OCR
(Optical Character Recognition) software. In most cases the students gain
a hitherto unknown self-confidence, they improve their scholastic and
work performance and begin to use written language (not error free)
without a computer. Some students start reading unassisted by technology.
With this software information technology becomes a powerful tool for
dyslexics. This software is with proper instruction capable of letting
anyone write whatever they can understand in any language supported by
synthetic voices (10 languages). Yak-Yak is also used in foreign language
training and in the rehabilitation of aphasics.
