Hi Kerri,
Does not the sound of a student speaking during a lecture affect those around them?
cheers,

At the University of Western Sydney we have been using Dragon Dictate
Naturally Speaking Preferred 'Mobile' quite sucessfully in lectures and
tutorials for the past year. This is a standard voice recognition program
that can be installed either on a laptop or desk PC computer, each person
using the program needs to have a voice file. Once you have the program
installed you can purchase the 'mobile' which is like a small hand held
tape recorder that you can use anywhere (no plugs or leads), the student
speaks into the mobile and later plugs the mobile into the PC and the
computer prints out what ever has been recorded on the mobile.
We have been using this system since March this year, the students find it
meets their needs, makes them independent and their notes in hard copy are
available immediately. Obviously if the student is taking their own notes
there is no need to employ a notetaker.

>I was hoping someone could shed some light on the following
>question.
> Has anyone heard of a student using a laptop in lectures
>with voice recognition software loaded on it as a method of recording
>information & turning it into note format ? The idea being that the
>voice will be turned into text, cutting out the need for note taking.
>One of our students is interested in using this as they say they
>know of someone at another institution who is doing this. However we
>have approached the manufactures and it appears that the software
>available still needs an individual voice file made for each voice
>that is recorded. I am concerned about progressing if it is not going
>to work, which is my suspicion. Does anyone know of a student using
>this set up ? or know if it is viable ?
>Any help greatly appreciated.
