I have recommended that people with epilepsy use LCD panel screens in the
past. Although providing a suitable monitor or notebook PC through the DSA
would cover the bases when the student is working at home, what about when
they are in computer labs on campus? We have one student who can bring in
her own LCD panel monitor when she needs to access the computer labs for
practicals etc., but I cannot see any completely ideal solution. Other
monitors in the room could still trigger a fit. When moving a LCD monitor is
difficult, some students here have brought in their own polarised glass
filters (around £75-100 for a top quality one) CatII (or even better) CATIII
lighting is always a good idea, but I doubt there are many open access
computer labs which are kitted out purely with LCD screens.
Standalone 15" LCD monitors are about £450+VAT now, so about £350+VAT on top
of a standard PC system. You may wish to weigh this up against the
advantages and disadvantages of a notebook PC with the LCD screen as
standard (would the student ever need to transport the LCD screen in for
practicals etc.)
