University of Wolverhampton
Division of English as a Foreign Language
English for Deaf Learners (EDL) Intermediate II
The Modules
The University of Wolverhampton will be offering modules in English for
Deaf Learners from September 1999. These modules are offered to deaf
learners exclusively and use a grammar-based, English as a Foreign Language
approach. Many Deaf learners are disadvantaged in their acquisition of
English and find coping with academic study and essay completion more
difficult than their hearing peers. These modules aim to improve general
proficiency in English as a second language and is equivalent to Cambridge
First Certificate. It is a general English course which focuses language
skill for academic study and general usage. The course focuses only on
reading and writing skills and is aimed primarily at BSL users. The modules
will be taught by lecturers who have many years experience of working with
Deaf people and have TESOL and BSL qualifications.
The EDL course is designed to be studied alongside a major subject (subject
to validation), such as Computing, or Deaf Studies, or can be accessed as
individual modules for part-time students. Each module is worth 15 credits
towards a degree subject.
Progression
EDL Intermediate II is the first stage and students can progress to
Advanced I and Advanced II (subject to validation) in subsequent years.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should posses GCSE English or equivalent skill and University
entry requirements or equivalent. All applicants are also required to
undertake an English assessment to ensure that they are placed at the right
level.
Costs
Full-time University of Wolverhampton students in the first and second year
of their degree courses can chose EDL as part of their degree programme
free of charge.
Part-time students can undertake the module as associate students at £105
per module (13 teaching weeks) although reduced tuition fees are available
for students claiming benefits. Students do not have to enrol on a degree
programme, but can study this module only. Part-time students are welcome
at the University.
Course Dates
Teaching will start on the 30th September 1999 and the module will take
place each Thursday 2pm - 5pm at Wolverhampton Mainsite. Intermediate Part
1 will run in semester one (September - December), part two will run in
