In reply to your request about coursework I would say the following:
Extra time - I advise students that they can ask for extra time from
tutors but should not get into the habit as this is not a good study
skills practice and will put their whole study timetable out.
Wordage - some of my colleagues ask for wordage allowances to be
made so that students do not have to exactly meet the word length
criteria for an assignment as dyslexic people may either have
difficulties expressing themselves succinctly or have problems
expressing their ideas at all. I do think this may be something to
consider initially but after time, and with the use of technology /
software and specialist study skills tuition it should not be
something to rely on in the long term.
Proof reading - We often ask lecturers to proof read draft
assignments where possible to provide guidance to students on the
relevance of their ideas and the manner in which they are expressing
themselves. Many tutors may not have time to do this but it may be
very useful for the odd assignment where the student is struggling.
Feedback - We ask lecturers if they will provide feedback to students
on individual assignments particularly the relevance of content,
structure and clarity of expression - not only the marks. We also ask
tutors to try to give good feedback on progress so the student has a
measure of how they are doing.
In the long term I feel that, given a student benefits from
technology and support from the DSA, no further allowances need to be
made.
If a student does not have the use of a PC then allowances for poor
grammar, self expression and spelling may well be requested - as they
are for examinations. In addition, much more course / personal tutor
support with proof reading may well lead to longer term improvements.
