We do not work on quite the same credit based system, but
many students have modern languages as an elective option
within other disciplines typically in 2nd year. We also offer
BSL at level1, subl level 2 and level 2, and have sudents taking
these courses as a variation on the language option. I have
particularly encouraged dyslexic students to consider sign
language as
1. they may have had unhappy experiences learning foreign
languages in school.
2. it gives them a bridge to communication with a different
group of disabled people, and may help affirm the positive view
of disabled identity.
3. the conceptual, expressive language of BSL can be so
satisfactory a way to get an idea across for right-brain thinkers.
