The DFEE Notes For Guidance has the following to say on the subject:
"DSA's are not intended for the costs of extra academic tuition or support
in the main subject area(s) being studied. Institutions should normally meet
these costs as part of providing the course."
So no problem there then!!! I think the issue becomes a little more complex
when a student is receiving learning support which has been tailored in
some way to the subject he or she is following. At that point it is down to
the LEA's discretion as to whether or not the extra tuition is course
specific or general study skills support.
As with a lot of things, the "black and white" guidance given by DFEE is
open to interpretation by each individual LEA and can only really be
considered on a case by case basis. Not a lot of help I know - sorry.

Subject: Learning Support vs tuition
Date: 12 August 1999 14:51
Could anyone clarify for me where the boundary lies betwenn learning
support for dyslexic students and subject tuition?
A student, who has severe dyslexia, asked me to approve DSA funding
for dyslexia support, including what appears to be subject tuition in
accountancy etc. I informed him that DSA can not be used to fund tuition
of this sort, but am having difficulty explaining the boundaries of what
is and what is not allowed.
Many thanks,
Clare
