TU membership is termed sensitive data and should not be processed without
explicit consent but in filling in the application form the employee gives
consent to the employer to deduct subscriptions. The Conservative
government passed legislation to make TU members 'sign up' at specific
intervals (I think it was every 3 years) to re-authorise their employer to
make deductions, but this was repealed by the present government very
quickly after taking up government but having given explicit consent once I
cant see a problem, but others of course may disagree with me!!!
The purpose for holding TU info is only for the collection of subs and it
does not give the employer the right to use it for any other purpose.
Indeed, under the Human Rights Act 1998 perhaps it would be an infringement
of their human rights???!! Anyone like to comment on that last point??
