Data Protection in the Age of Cyberspace
Elizabeth France
Data Protection Registrar
The Data Protection regime started in a world where only large
organisations had large computers and where the fear was massive
privacy-invading databases. It was feasible for individual countries to
pass legislation which controlled the behaviour of businesses which
operated within their jurisdictions. But in today's globalised world and
as e-commerce grows exponentially, what is the future for Data
Protection? The United States has a wholly different approach towards
privacy. Mrs France will discuss these difficult and perplexing issues.
Members of the public may attend free of charge but must pre-register by

Rules. The LSE Clement Building is on the Aldwych, London WC2 between the
Law Courts and the south end of Kingsway; there is a large hanging white
sign on the outside.
