Chris,
update on my last email - here it is from the horses mouth - the passport
agency:
Since October 1998, ALL children who were not already included on a valid
10-year passport now need to hold their own passport if they are to travel
abroad.
It is no longer possible to add or re-include children on British passports.
This includes newborn babies and all children up to the age of 16. Children
aged 16 and over already have to hold their own passports and are unaffected
by these changes.

----
Children who were included on a passport before 5 October 1998
Children who were included on a valid passport before 5th October 1998 may
continue to travel with the passport holder until either:
The child reaches the age of 16; or
The passport on which the child is included expires; or
The passport on which the child is included is submitted for amendment*
whichever of these occurs first.
* Remember - children cannot be re-added to passports which are submitted
for amendment after 5th October 1998. In these circumstances, you will need
to apply for separate passports for any children who were previously
included on your passport.

Passports for children aged 0 - 15 years
Since the 5th October 1998, ALL children who are not already included on a
valid 10-year passport need to hold their own passport if they are to travel
abroad. The cost is £11 and the passport will initially be made valid for 5
years. The passport may be renewed for a further 5 years, on application, on
payment of a further £11.*
*(Passports which were issued to a child with a validity of 5 years before
26 March 1998 may be extended for a further 5 years without further cost by
completing the application form (tick box D).

Subject: RE: help - passports for kids - does anyone know the answer?
18 months ago I renewed my passport and had my young children's names added
to it (as you could then).
I have just phoned up the private contractor dealing with phone calls re
passports. I was told that ALL children need a passport EVEN IF THEY ARE
ALREADY NAMED ON A CURRENT PASSPORT.
Mind you, this advice began "It is my understanding ...." (as in "it is my
understanding that Barnsley is the best football team in the UK")
I had thought that only people APPLYING for passports are affected.
Can anyone confirm the advice I have been given (ie have they had to get a
passport for their children even though they had a current passport with the
children entered in it)!
