Very much a "horses for courses" situation - depends on the student
and the kind of problems they experience and how they cope. In the
majority of cases here we stipulate that students should be given
ample warning regarding assignments, advice regarding essesntial,
rather than preferred reading lists (especially if you are going to
have a whole class chasing the same books in the library at the same
time), and although they are expected to make a reasonable
presentation of their work, staff are asked to think about content
and read the work in context, rather than mark down what may seem
like bizarre spellings or grammatical errors. Occasionally we will
make a plea for an extension if there are problems accessing
information e.g. where the main sources of information are in short
supply and there is a large class - or ask for the works to be put on
restricted loan at the library.
Hope this may be of some help.
