When I hear people discussing this, I wish that the UK had a phone
system similar to that in Canada and America where local and internet
calls are unmetred. It is yet another example of the British public
being ripped off.
Here at Hull we are in the enviable position of having a local phone
company offering unmetred local calls for 5.5p. Providing that the
student uses the university dial in service or Karoo, the same charge
applies. For many of our students, this has proved very useful
indeed.
In the past, I have allowed for the cost of a second phone line (if
the student is in private housing or living with family) and have got
the computer centre to increase their online time limit from one hour
to the three hour staff limit. The students who I have made this
recommendation for have felt it very fare.
