YOU CAN STRETCH YOUR OWN HORIZON...
Life is a succession of lessons which must be
lived to be understood.
If you wish to know the road up the mountain to
success, find someone who goes back and forth on it.
Knowledge of the path leading to success can not
substitute for putting one foot in front of the other.
Wisdom is meaningless until your own experience gives
it meaning.
Hear and you forget,
see and you remember,
do and you understand.
Finding the road to success is easy,
taking action is another matter.

[-LETTERS TO EDITOR-]
Dear Editor,
I am so glad I found your site. What a kind loving
place on the web. The more that people can get to
see pages like yours, the more they will get it in
their heads that being disabled, doesn't mean you
are incapable.
I am disabled and I have done more with myself than
most of my able bodied friends. If you put your mind
to something, you can do it. I have won many awards
for my animated cartoons. So many people laugh and
tell me to stop wasting my time. 3 out of 10 of my
animated cartoons have won AOL's top prize. I never
ever drew in my life till I made my first animated
cartoon. I never had any art classes or anything
like it... Yet my first cartoon beat out thousands
of other AOL'ers in the graphic contest I entered
in. The next month I won again...two months later,
I won it again. So please to all, just give the
disabled a chance. Say hello, or shake our hand,
a smile is nice too.....

Dear Editor,
Did you know that by the year 2000, there will be
over 30 million new users on the Internet?
We're sure that you will agree that the Internet
represents a golden opportunity for those seeking
to capitalize on such an explosive industry.
You can be at the forefront of this exciting
opportunity by becoming an Independent Representative
for FlashNet. As a FlashNet representative, you can
earn income by enrolling new customers and helping
others do the same.
FlashNet offers a program that is easy to understand
and requires no previous sales or technical experience.
This is a great opportunity to pursue part or full time.
FlashNet is one of the largest Internet companies in the
U.S. and the largest privately held service provider in
the nation. FlashNet was founded in 1995 ad is rapidly
becoming a well-known national Internet provider.
In 1996, we were one of the fastest growing Internet
provider companies, and in 97, our customer base tripled!
FlashNet is dedicated to service; we were recently
awarded a national customer service ranking of
third overall, exceeding the performance of industry
giants. We are, also, competitively priced. With services
priced at $17.95 a month, our rates are well below other
national providers. (In Some areas we can offer you
full access rates for less than 13.50 per month)
We are independent representatives and happy we joined
this fine opportunity. It's a lot of fun, we help people
and make a few extra dollars per month too!!

TENACITY WINS FOR JACOBS FAMILY!...
In Fort Belvoir, Virginia the Fairfax County Public Schools
decided, after months of debate, that five year old Collin
Jacobs will be able to attend elementary school with the rest
of his kindergarten-age friends this fall. Collin, a bright,
sociable boy whose Cerebral Palsy significantly affects his
motor skills, is excited about attending school with his twin
sister, Laura and his older sister, Sarah.
During his two years in a Fairfax County pre-school, his
teachers, parents, and school district psychologists agreed
that Collin learns best in a regular classroom setting. A
disagreement arose, however, when Collin's parents, Chief
Warrant Officer Paul and Jill Jacobs, asked that Collin be
allowed to attend his neighborhood school. In Fairfax County,
children with significant disabilities have customarily been
bussed to Special Education centers in schools separate, and
oftentimes distant, from their homes.
The newly constructed, 15 million dollar Fairfax County
school is completely accessible and, as one of the school
district's integrated service-model schools, can fully
accommodate Collin's educational needs. This, coupled with
a supportive military community and the endorsement of
Collin's former teachers, spurred the school district
administration to recommend last week that he be given the
opportunity to receive an education in what is known as a
"full inclusion" environment.
The Jacobs family is elated with the Fairfax County
Public Schools' compliance with the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA mandates that,
to the fullest extent possible, children with disabilities
should be included in regular classes with supplementary
aids and services. A state's receipt of education funds
from the Federal Government is dependent upon its
compliance with the requirements of IDEA.
In response to the school district's decision, Collin's Mother,
Jill said, "On Collin's behalf, we would like to thank FCPS
officials for recognizing their responsibility to educate our
son as they would any other non-disabled Fairfax County student.
We are grateful to FCPS teachers and administrators for choosing
to see Collin's ability first and foremost, and to prepare
accordingly for the accommodations presented by his disability.
We would like to congraulate Dr. Daniel Domenech, Superintendent
of Schools, Dr. Alice Farling, Superintendent of Special
Education, and Betsy Fenske, Principal of Fort Belvoir
Elementary for the leadership they have shown today. "Chief
Warrant Officer Jacobs added, "We would like to publicly
commend Fairfax County officials for their committment not
only to Collin, but for making evident today their intention
to move forward with a plan that will allow children with
disabilities in Fairfax County to be educated in their
neighborhhod schools, if their families so choose. We are
very pleased that Fairfax County Public School officials have
faith in their own special and general education personnel.
We do, too."
In closing, the Jacobs family noted "We would like to
thank all of those who have supported us; local, state
and national disability advocates, the Fort Belvoir
community, and particularly the disability advocacy
organization TASH, Assist Consulting, and Collin's legal
counsel from the law firm of Weil, Gotschal, & Manges."
[WAPD NOTE] Our warmest congratulations go to Paul, Jill,
Sarah, Laura, and Collin Jacobs. We are very happy at this
outcome!.. See: July 27..BEACON for [dis]ABILITY Letters to
the editor. <http://www.wapd.org/news/index.html>
A very strong refusal to give up and beliefs of "If It's
Gonna be..It's up to me!"...is the hallmark of this fine
family. Mrs. Jacobs, consultant for the FDR Memorial in
Washington D.C. was one of those that represented WAPD
at the hearings on MiCasa HR2020, March 12, 1998. She
read the WAPD press release of support into the record.

Presents For The Teacher
On the last day of kindergarten, all the children
brought presents for their teacher. The florist's
son handed the teacher a gift. She shook it, held
it up and said, "I bet I know what it is - it's
some flowers!" " Right!" shouted the little boy.
Then the candy store owner's daughter handed the
teacher a gift. She held it up, shook it and said.
"I bet I know what it is - it's a box of candy!"
"That's right!" shouted the little girl.
The next gift was from the liquor store owner's son.
The teacher held it up and saw that it was leaking.
She touched a drop with her finger and tasted it.
"Is it wine?" she asked. "No," the boy answered.
The teacher touched another drop to her tongue.
"Is it champagne?" she asked. "No," the boy answered.
Finally, the teacher said, "I give up. What is it?"
The boy replied, "A puppy!"
