I was intersted to see Tina Elliotts comments about rates of pay for
support workers and I agree with the comment "it depends on their level of
qualification".
Around 4 pounds an hour sound appropriate for mobility around campus and
is about what I would recommend for student helpers.
Note-taking is more difficult. Five to eight pounds an hour may be fine
for student note-takers, who are on campus anyway, but we use CACDP
trained graduates wherever possible.
They are self-employed, working on a hourly-paid, freelance basis with no
provision for National Insurance, travel expenses, travel time etc.
I recommend around twelve pounds and hour when they are note-taking for
deaf students, and a little less - say nine to ten pounds an hour for
disabled students. Note-taking is a demanding professional job, and
the note-takers should be paid accordingly. Maybe it is less where
note-takers are employed full-time, rather than only for direct student
contact hours?
The alternative, which we often find easier to arrange than live
note-taking, is typing lecture notes from a tape recording. I recommend
five pounds per thousand words (edited to remove waffle etc). We have
found that the typist has to have experience of higher education to be
able to edit appropriately - other typists tend to either have difficulty
identifying waffle, or over-edit and leave out relevant information.
Yes, it can be expensive - but most courses only have a few hours of
lectures a week (typically between three and ten hours a week at UCN).
