Hi Denise
I had a similar but different problem about three years
ago. In our case the student only had use of one hand/arm,
which makes operating an industrial sewing machine tricky.
The machine suppliers/manufacturers could not help with any
adaptations. The voluntary organisation REMAP tel: 01732
883818 where helpful (engineers who in their spare time
will design and produce gadgets/adaptations for people with
disabilities). I would note also that these machines are
quite powerful and require quite a bit of control with the
hands, which may be compromised if the elbow or upper arm
is used to control the machine. It would be advisable to
discuss any ideas with the tutor running the workshop at an
early stage.
Alternatively there may be a case for having an assistant
doing the actual sewing, as long as it is produced to the
the students specifications. Dress designers don't
actually make up their frocks themselves do they?
