The thread on scanners raises the question in my mind:
When is the cost of Kurzweil 3000 (ukp 725) justified compared with the
lower cost (c ukp170) of separate OCR and textreader such as textHELP! ?
I would tend to argue that **if** a scanner is justified (ie the student
will benefit from being able to put their books on screen and hear them,
despite the extra time/labour involved in reading this way), then the more
efficient, quicker, more convenient, more helpful Kurzweil 3000 solution is
practically always also justified.
But it's clearly quite a lot more from the public purse (and into our
pockets as vendors). How do dis-forum members draw the line when you are
making recommendations for ocr? (Our current thinking, FWIW, is at
http://www.dyslexic.com/ocr.htm and
http://www.dyslexic.com/kurzweil3000.htm. Please note the ukp725 price,
reduced from 1395, is theoretically a special offer, but hopefully
permanent.)
