I am responsible for co-ordinating special needs provision at this Uni and personally I would
not want to be the person who assesses whether a student has dyslexia - or any other condition
for that matter. In many HEIs the outcome of a positive assessment can be that charges are then
levied for the dyslexia support, needs assessment, technology training (and probably etc). The
student is also in line for extra time in exams, which should not be treated lightly. I think
it is wise to have an independent report from a recognized expert.
It's no wonder LEAs are suspicious.
