The above circular, entitled "Widening participation in HE: funding
proposals", deals with possible ways that HEFCE might direct fund
universities to improve the take up of certain groupd of
disadvantaged students such as disabled or those who are poor. It
also looks at improving links between HE and other sectors like FE.
I'm not sure our senior staff realised the interest it might have for
us, but responses have to be in by November 2. Chief interest to
me was p 5 where they propose that they should use the DSA as
the criterion for providing funding to the HEI. Having tried other
ways to define how many disabled students there were in a college
they have settled on the number who are in receipt of the DSA as
the most robust figure. Particularly as it is no longer means tested
and may be extended to PT and post-grads.
I wont list the possible problems I see, before we get too picky we
need to have a better alternative and I can't think of one. Get hold of
your copy and start sharing your ideas.
