Dear All,
Further to David's e-mail below -
at Sheffield dyslexic medical students have extra time in written
exams but not in practicals. The issue of practicals is being
discussed because there is usually a written element in the practical
exam. The difficulties with practicals have been the management of the exams -
where students get 3 minutes for each practical slot and then move on, it
can be diffcult to sort out how to manage any extra time element -
but we are working on it.

It may be worth contacting the universities directly and asking them for
a copy of their equal opportunity statement. As far as I am aware medical
students should not be treated differently to other students on the basis
of their access to education - some schools may refuse an applicant if
the 'disability' puts the patient at risk. But I do not know how this is
assessed!!??
It may also be worth contacting the British Medical Association (BMA) to
see if they have any comment to make.
If you get a response I would like to know.
As an additional point, I know of hearing impaired students medical
students (in Sheffield anyway) that have been offered extra time in
examinations - so it may be worth 'shopping around' a little more.
David.
