We are faced with a similar situation to Clare in that we
have the post on the understanding that it is self-funding,
including administrative costs. We charge 32stg per hour for
individual support and provide both individual and group
support.
When I am working with a student I want to be able
to think in terms of what support can be provided rather
than whether they have 'income generating potential'. I do
not think like that, but that is the position I am being
placed in by having to cover all costs.
I would argue that the service should be a University
funded one with the added bonus that some of the costs can
be offset via DSA. There are many positives for providing
support for students with dyslexia but the current financial
climate seems to be less supportive towards moves in that
direction.
Of course it also raises the question of all the students
who need support but cannot access the DSA. I want to be
supporting students rather than worrying about balancing
the books.
Any magic wands out there?
Kind Regards
Emma
