SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE TAKE RISKS...

Accept risk as a natural part of living.
View it as part of the process of exploring
your world; make note of its lessons and move
on.....
Forget about the consequences of risk.
The risks you take opens you to a temporary
change in direction that can set you straight
for your next success...
You'll find that nobody succeeds beyond their
wildest expectations unless they begin with
some pretty wild expectations...
The difference in your life between greatness
and mediocrity will be how often you take risks.
If you're big enough to risk, to temporarily
live outside your comfort zone, you're big
enough to WIN....

[-LETTERS TO EDITOR-]

Dear Editor,

All Mac (dis)ABLED owners unite!!!

New voice activated software company MacSpeech
<www.macspeech.com> needs your input!

Please go to the above site and fill out a short survey
to help in bringing this much needed product to market.

The questions are simple, forthright and CONFIDENTIAL!

Like how much you would pay? What applications would you
like to run with it? What platform do you use? Stuff like
that. Why they even ask if you’d like to test it!

Hey, competition is good. Tends to keep prices honest.
Here’s a company willing to listen to us BEFORE the
product is finished and THEN ask us to buy it. Unlike
others who don’t.

Take 5 minutes and fill out the survey. In the end
we’ll ALL benefit.

Regards,

Dear Editor,

Hello. I found you through the Inst. on Independant Living.
Our son is now 12 yrs. , was born with Spina Bifida and
Hydrocephalus. He has been harassed, assaulted, and
battered continuously since Aug. 1995, by a neighborhood
boy, two years older, taller, and physically whole. This
culminated this school year with this deviate boy
threatening to "kick" our son's "ass" at school.

The above was reported and followed up on by my wife and I.
The deviates parents then came to our home, and his father
physically threatened me!... in our home, with witness's.
Later, the father intentionally got my wife alone, and
threatened her! Then, apparently as a ruse or stratagem,
this sick family filed a fraudulent restraining order on us!

We have never been the aggressors in this matter.
After the first judge told them no/no R.O., they got another
judge, and based upon their lies/fabrications/distortions,
their drinking partners lies, etc...the second judge gave them
a permanent R.O. against us, & refused us a R.O. against them!

We now must file bankruptcy as this looney judge ordered us
to pay all of their extravagant legal fees, plus our own.
We cannot pay either. this amount total may be 15,000 to
20,000. We intend to fight this judges order, and may need
further legal aid, and financing.

Please, if their is anything you can do, we need help.

Thank you,
The Child Family

[WAPD NOTE] We hope that there is help for you out there
in our membership ranks...Unfortunately WAPD does not have
enough of a financial "war-chest" to assist with these types
of cases. Our membership base is very large but 99.99% do not
pay annual dues of $20 that would allow us to function in
these types of capacities..and 98% of the volunteer helpers
are not sincere. Perhaps in the future as some begin to realize
that power is in participation..WAPD will gladly be able to say
YES, with certainty, We Can Help!.. Until that time be assured
that our prayers and best wishes go with you...Keep Fighting!
Don't Give Up!..Don't ever Give up!!!!

Dear Editor,

Hello, Do you know of any organizations that help with the
funding of vans?? I know that BVR helps with modifications
but not the purchase of the vehicle.
Thank you!

[WAPD NOTE] Our CFO done some minor research about a
disABLED persons credit union that could help with such
things and empower more folks to do some of the things
they would like to do. If just 10,000 of the WAPD members
would pay a $20 per year membership we would have an
excellent start for making such loans....Much better than
playing the lottery isn't it!!! We predict that our
membership will respond and 12mo. from this date the WAPD
Credit union will be announced.....

IGNORANCE/MISTREATMENT MUST STOP!

The Associated Press reported that Four boys in Toledo,
Ohio allegedly hog-tied and tortured a 15-year-old
learning-disabled acquaintance, using a broom stick, a
fly swatter and a belt to beat him.

Prosecutors want a 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds to
be tried as adults for Tuesday's attack, in which they
allegedly ordered the boy to pull down his pants.

All four were charged with delinquency in connection
with felonious assault, aggravated arson, and kidnapping,
including the 15-year-old suspect's 9-year-old brother.

The boys appeared Wednesday before Lucas County Juvenile
Court Judge Joseph Flores, who ordered the boys held in
the juvenile detention center.

The victim was released from the hospital Thursday July 30.

The boys told the victim, whom they knew, that they were
going to play some games and watch television. But once
inside..according to sheriff's Detective Bruce Birr, "the
boys just thought of things to do, and made them up as
they went along."

"They took one of those big, plastic dog bones, and beat
his knees until they bled. They just kept going," he said.

Authorities said they hog-tied him and jumped off a table
onto him.

They used a broom stick, a fly swatter, a belt, and several
other items to beat him, and then they ordered him to pull
his pants down, according to a sheriff's department report.

"They put Super Glue on his privates, put a pack of
firecrackers in between his buttocks, lit them, and left
the room," according to the report.

After about an hour, "They just got tired of what they were
doing and let him go," Birr said.

The victim who was described as a slow learner but does not
need constant supervision called his brother, who went to
the apartment, took him home and called authorities.

The four boys were arrested a short time later. "They
weren't remorseful one bit," Birr said. "They were joking
and laughing about it."

[WAPD NOTE] We printed this because it makes us incensed
to see that adults/society who were responsible for all of
these juvenile delinquents are not being punished as well.
Launghing and poking fun at any/all persons must stop!

Responsibility and respect must be taught at home.. NOT by
placing misguided/ignorant youth in jails that will teach
more disrespect and bad habits... The seriously DIS-abled,
four perpetuators, are the ones that will be locked up for
this failure of our society...Think About It!.. Most would
probably rather spend their time following or joking about
the famous soap opera of Monica L. & Bill C. than to do
something meaningful....How about you????...Does anything
matter unless it's your own legs being amputated? Have you
kept up with the news <http://www.wapd.org/bbs/index.html>
It does affect you!

AGGIE KIDNAPPER

An Aggie was down on his luck. To raise
money he decided to kidnap a kid and hold
him for ransom. He went to the playground,
grabbed a kid, took him behind a tree, and told
him, "I've kidnapped you."

He then wrote a note saying: "I've kidnapped
your kid. Tomorrow morning, put $10,000 in a
paper bag and put it beneath the pecan tree
next to the slide on the north side of the city
playground." Signed, "An Aggie."

The Aggie pinned the note to the kid's shirt
and sent him home to his parents.

The next morning the Aggie checked, and sure
enough a paper bag was sitting beneath that
pecan tree. The Aggie opened the bag and
found $10,000 and a note. The note said,
"How could you do this to a fellow Aggie?!"

[WAPD NOTE] Whoops!!! Guess we shouldn't laugh
at this but...heee hee he. NONE of us are perfect

NAMI E-NEWS - FDA POLICY ALERT...

FDA Approves New SSRI For The Treatment Of Depression

On July 17, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
approved for marketing the new antidepressant medication,
Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide). This highly selective
SSRI has already been available throughout Europe, where
it has been clinically used for the treatment of
depression in more than eight million people.

Results from studies show that Celexa improves the
symptoms of depression, regardless of patient age, race,
or gender. In addition, other studies indicate that Celexa
may be effective in preventing relapse of depression.

Following is a NAMI fact sheet about this new medication.

Facts about Celexa

What is Celexa?

Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide) is a new, highly selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that was approved by
the FDA for the treatment of depression in July of 1998.
More than five million consumers have already been
prescribed Celexa, which is currently available in 49 other
countries. Celexa was developed by the Danish pharmaceutical
firm H. Lundbeck A/S and will be marketed in the U.S. by
Forest Laboratories, which will also co-promote the
medication with Parke-Davis.

How is Celexa different from other antidepressants?

Celexa has a chemical structure unrelated to that of other
SSRI’s. It is a highly selective inhibitor of serotonin
reuptake with little or no affinity for other
neurotransmitter receptors. This selectivity may result in
fewer sexual side effects, such as decreased libido and
delayed ejaculation, than other SSRI’s. Celexa may also
cause less drug interactions, which could make the
antidepressant a good choice for medically compromised
individuals such as the elderly or those with comorbid
illness. Additionally, Celexa appears to be safe to use
on a long-term basis and may cause less withdrawal when
use is stopped.

Several studies have also revealed other possible
applications for this antidepressant. Celexa was shown
to be effective in treating post-stroke depression and
in alleviating emotional disturbances in elderly consumers
with dementia disorders. Like other SSRIs, Celexa may
also prove to be effective in the treatment of panic
disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is
important to note that these observations are based on
a few limited studies. So far, Celexa has only been
approved for the treatment of depression.

What are the side effects of Celexa?

The side effects most frequently reported with Celexa
tend to be those associated with other SSRIs. However,
some note these effects to be less extreme. The most
commonly reported side effects are increased sweating,
sleepiness, nausea, tremor, dry mouth, lack or loss of
strength, headache, weight loss or gain, dizziness,
and restlessness. Less commonly reported are sexual
side effects and drug interactions. Such adverse
events usually decrease in intensity and frequency as
the depressive state improves.

Clinical evidence also shows that Celexa is not
associated with tachycardia or postural hypotension.

How does Celexa interact with other medications?

Like other SSRIs, Celexa should not be taken with
monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Although Celexa
is noted for its reduced instances of drug interactions,
you should always let your doctor know what other
medications you are taking.

What is the standard dosage of Celexa?

It is recommended that Celexa be administered as a
single oral dose of 20 mg daily. Dependent on individual
patient response, this may be increased to a maximum of
60 mg daily for adults or 30 mg daily for the elderly.
