Dear Caryl,
The EC has issued Health & Safety Directives which are binding on member
states. In the UK there are regulations under the 'Workplace Health,Safety
& Welfare Regulations 1992' to comply with these directives.
relevant regs are 'Manual Handling Operations regulations 1992'.Also in
genearl an employer is legally obliged to conduct a 'risk asessment' of
all work-place activities - such a procedure should most certainly be
'risk-assessed'.
More advice available from your trade Union or the Health & safety Executive
who issue 'Approved Codes of practice and Guidance' on the regulations.
Hope this helps
