We had a student with narcolepsy some years ago on our
Science Foundation course. He could have had amphetamines
from his GP but didn't, partly because he was wary of
taking them, but also because he had tried them and felt
that thay didn't really help. His strategy was to have a
short sleep before lectures, practicals, exams etc so he
would be more likely to stay awake. Fellow students and
lecturers were primed to nudge him if he dropped off in
class. I invigilated his exams and would wake him if he
fell asleep, allowing him extra time for the period he was
asleep.
