I have recently been writing code for my Penfriend predictive typer which
has to follow the caret (text cursor), or at least know which window
it is in. I found that for non word processors this was fairly easy,
especially in Windows 3.1. For word processors and rather more programs
generally in Windows 95, I could not find the coordinates of the caret,
although I could tell which window had the focus.
So what is the relevance of this? If a separate program wants to enhance
the caret, it has to know where it is. Thus as far as I can tell, there
is no way to do that for the big word processors (from a separate
program). The only way would be if Microsoft cared. Nuff said.
To find out which programs it is possible for, you could download the
demonstration of my predictive typer from http://www.jasper.co.uk/penfriend/
and try the 'follow caret' feature in the program of your choice. If it
works, it would be easy to knock up a program to highlight the caret.
