Dear Louise,
Portable induction loops are available from a whole range of services, some
of which have been mentioned - I would add Connevans (01737) 247571, who
have a real advantage on price. - I think last time i asked they sold a
portable version for £500, but actual price will depend heavily on the
microphone and the size of the room (hence the power of the amplifier).
Things to bear in mind;
1) where is it kept
2) who is responsible for its maintenance
3) how is it booked
4) how do people know about it
5) if it is for a meeting then a desk mike is recommended - if it is for
lectures then a permanent installation is preferred, or lapel or hand held
microphones.
6) the loop can be a bit of a trip hasard, and a real pain to put around
the room each time. - I therefore tend to prefer a system where the likely
rooms are permanently wired with the aerial loop, and any permanenet
microphones installed. I then recommend a small shelf is installed near to
a 13A switchable plug outlet and a place for the microphone lead sorted
out. This means that the only portable bit is the amplifier and microphone,
and installation is a two minute job rather than a 10 minute job.
Ideally you should get some fedback from staff/students in other
universities who have used them - or contact the deaft student clubs
locally or at universities.
